Standard Size for Double Hung Windows

The windows you choose for your home provide information to the viewer about the style and era of the home and the amount of light that fills the interior space. Small windows speak of dark spaces, and windows with larger panes of glass speak of bright, open rooms. Double-hung windows fall into the latter category and provide many options and sizes to help improve air flow, energy savings and deliver a custom look.
  1. Description

    • Double-hung windows are two separately framed, single panes of glass placed one above the other. The difference between a single-hung window and a double-hung window is found in the way they operate. A double-hung window opens from the bottom and the top, allowing more options for air flow -- the single opens only from the bottom. Because the double-hung window operates from both directions, each pane of framed glass can be opened at the same time or one at a time -- the frames slide one over the other. Double-hung windows are also called double-hung sash windows.

    Types

    • Double-hung windows described as “tilt-wash” are designed to be easily cleaned. The tilt-wash window uses a release mechanism that releases the window frame from its sash so the frame of glass can tilt toward the interior of the home, be slid down the side of the sash and rest on the window sill for easy cleaning. Double-hung windows are manufactured in vinyl, fiberglass and wood -- pine, alder, mahogany and Douglas fir. Manufacturers provide the option of adding grilles or mullions to divide the clear panes of glass into many panes of glass. Grilles can be custom designed or selected from a set of standard styles. Grilles can be applied to the interior, the exterior or sandwiched and sealed between the double-hung window's layers of glass.

    Sizes

    • Standard sizes for double-hung windows are called stock sizes. Stock sizes distinguish between double-hung windows that are available for immediate purchase and windows that must be custom-made. Stock sizes for double-hung windows begin at a measurement of 12 inches in height or width and progress at six inch increments with dimensions of up to 60 inches in width. The height of a double-hung window can be as tall as 120 inches depending upon the manufacturer. Examples include windows sized at 36 inches by 48 inches, 24 inches by 36 inches and 36 inches by 72 inches. Because double-hung windows are opened from the top and bottom, the larger measurement is always the vertical or height dimension, and the smaller measurement is always the width or horizontal dimension.

    Options

    • Specifying a double-hung window includes identifying hardware, frame color and glass. Hardware is typically specified in a metal or painted finish -- brass, white and nickel are common standard finishes. Standard frame colors vary with the sash finish -- wood offers the option of painting, while vinyl and fiberglass may not. Glass choices will vary according to the manufacture and whether or not the window is energy-rated. Insulated glass offers an additional option to for energy savings on a double-hung window.
