How to Repair Vertical Sliders on Windows

Tracks attached to the side edges of a window frame allow the vertical window sliders to move up and down to open or close the window. However, even the tiniest bend in the track will keep the slider from moving smoothly along its path. While small bends are relatively easy to repair, the only way to repair a badly damaged slider that constantly gets caught in its track is to replace it with a new piece.

Things You'll Need

  • Straightedge
  • Wood block

Instructions

    • 1

Place a straightedge along the bent section in the track. Hold a wooden block flush against the bend in the slider. Tap the block gently with a hammer to straighten it to its original shape. Move the block along the bent section and continue tapping the slider track to straighten it.

    • 2

Unlock the vertical slider along the front of the window to allow it to freely move on its track if you need to replace the slider. The locking mechanism is typically located at the top of the window slider.

    • 3

Use a screwdriver to loosen and remove the pair of screws located at the top of the side rails. Essential safety features, these screws prevent the window from being raised from outside by intruders. Removing the screws increases the sliders' vertical movement along its track.

    • 4

Pry the vertical slider upward to reveal the rubber or plastic stoppers in the track. Loosen and release the stoppers from the track with a flat-head screwdriver. Assign a helper to hold the vertical slider in its upward position while you remove the stoppers.

    • 5

Grasp the slider and slowly pull it down until it slides off its track. Ensure the replacement slider matches the length and dimensions of the damaged one.

    • 6

Wipe the window track with a sponge and a mild soapy solution to remove any dust or dirt. If, however, you thoroughly cleaned the track before the replacement process, simply wipe away any dust along the track with a dry cloth.

    • 7

Place the replacement vertical slider on the track and reinstall the stoppers back into their original locations. The stoppers will automatically get caught in their places. Replace the pair of screws along the upper sides of the window rails using a screwdriver.
