How to Repair a Hole in the Stucco Where an Old Window Was

When you remove an old window from a house, you should patch the hole so that the patched area matches the existing surface. If the exterior of your home is stucco, you will need to experiment with fresh stucco to try to match the existing pattern on your exterior. Subtle differences in the texture and thickness of batches of stucco can change their appearance, so the process of matching can be challenging.

Instructions

    • 1

Measure the height and width of the opening where the window was. Cut two pieces of 2-by-4 lumber to the height measurement and two pieces of 2-by-4 lumber to the width measurement, minus 3 inches.

    • 2

Assemble the four pieces of 2-by-4 lumber that you cut in Step 1 into a frame with exterior dimensions that match the size of the hole in the wall. Drive 3-inch-long screws through the faces of the vertical members and into the ends of the horizontal members to form a rectangle.

    • 3

Place the frame into the wall opening and position it so that its outside face is inset 1 inch from the exterior face of the wall. Secure the frame by driving 3-inch-long screws through it and into the existing studs in the wall.

    • 4

Cut a piece of 3/4-inch-thick plywood to the dimensions of the hole in the wall. Place the piece of plywood into the hole and screw it onto the frame that you installed, using 1 1/2-inch-long screws.

    • 5

Cut a piece of wire mesh to the same size as the piece of plywood. Attach the wire mesh to the plywood by nailing it on with roofing nails.

    • 6

Mix up a batch of stucco and spread it over the wire mesh. Cover the entire area and try to match the pattern of the surrounding stucco.
