How to Install Vinyl Windows in Brick Veneer Walls

Installing a vinyl window into a brick veneer wall is little different from installing the window into any wall opening. As long as the rough opening for the window is in place, it’s just a matter of finding the vinyl window that fits the space. From there, you simply proceed to place the window into the opening, secure it, and conceal the joint surrounding the window. Because a vinyl window comes within its own frame, ready for installation, the process is a quick one, streamlined by the window manufacturer for your convenience.

  • Tape measure
  • Vinyl window
  • Silicone caulk
  • Roofing nails
  • Hammer
  • Wood shims

Instructions

    • 1

Measure the window opening in the wall with a tape measure. Write down the length, width and depth of the opening. Purchase a window that fits the opening depth but is 1/2 inch less than the window length and width, to allow room for fitting the window properly.

    • 2

Apply a bead of silicone caulk around the perimeter of the window, placing it onto the back of the nail fin around the window body. Use enough of the caulk to make the bead about 1/4 inch in width.

    • 3

Push the window into the opening. Insert the window from the outside; making sure the caulked nail fin is pressed into the structure.

    • 4

Drive a roofing nail through one of the top corners of the window’s nail fin. Use nails that are long enough to reach a depth of 1 inch into the wall stud besides the window or the header running over it. If the studs are metal, use #6 corrosion-resistant fasteners and drive them into the stud at least 1/4 inch deep.

    • 5

Adjust the position of the window so it’s plumb and level within the opening. Use wood shims beneath a low corner to level the window out. Check that it’s plumb and level with a carpenter’s level before continuing.

    • 6

Nail the remaining corners into place, and then proceed to place a nail every 3 inches through the nail fin and into the frame of the wall, working from the corners towards the center of the window. Nail only the top of the window and the sides at this time.

    • 7

Place a piece of roofing felt along the base of the window beneath the bottom edge, overlapping the frame and descending down the face of the wall 4 inches, to aid in keeping water from penetrating over the window sill and into the window. Cut the felt with a utility knife.

    • 8

Nail the bottom of the nail fin to the frame as you did the top and sides.

    • 9

Fill the space between the window and the frame with silicone caulk to seal the joint.

    • 10

Install window trim around the outside of the window to cover the window joint.
