Removing Glass Window Frames From the Basement

You may need to remove window frames from a basement in the process of removing the window and bricking up the opening, or because you are replacing old and leaky windows with new, more efficient ones. The process of removing an old window from a basement opening is fairly straightforward, particularly if you are not planning to reuse the window and its condition after it is removed doesn't matter.

Instructions

    • 1

Remove the windows from the window frames. How you do this will vary depending on what style of windows they are. In most windows, you will need to pry off the strips that hold the window sash into the frames, then lift the pieces of sash out of the frames.

    • 2

Cut around the outside perimeter of the window frame with a reciprocating saw to sever any nails or screws that are holding the window frame in place.

    • 3

Cut through one side of the window frame with the reciprocating saw.

    • 4

Bend one part of the side that you cut through in toward the center of the window using a crowbar. Loosen the window frame by moving it back and forth with your hands.

    • 5

When the window frame is loose and all the nails and screws that are connecting it to the wall have been cut, pull it out of the wall.
