How to Take Apart Sliding Vinyl Windows

Sliding vinyl windows are common in U.S. homes because they’re less expensive than wooden windows. Like glass in all windows, however, the glass inside sliding vinyl windows can break. If that happens, you can take the windows apart to fix the glass yourself instead of replacing entire windows. You'll save a significant amount of money and learn a skill.

Instructions

    • 1

Remove the screws that hold a sliding vinyl window in place. The screws are on all four sides of the window and hold it into the wall. If the window is nailed in place, use a hammer to take out the nails. Use a chisel to remove caulk around the window. Remove the window from the wall.

    • 2

Lay the window on a flat surface, such as a table or floor.

    • 3

Loosen the screws on all four sides of both window panel frames, eight screws in total. Because the window slides, it has two panels, and every corner in a panel's frame holds a screw. The sliding portion of the window has four screws, and the stationary portion of the window has four screws.

    • 4

Pull the vinyl frame from the glass. If you want to install new glass, set the new glass on a raised surface, fit the pieces of vinyl frame around the glass and screw the frame into place.
