How to Install Storm Windows With Reinforced Felt Channels

Older houses benefit more from storm windows than nearly any other upgrade a homeowner can perform. In the past, storm windows were relatively simple and relied on air pockets to insulate against the cold. Today's storm windows are far more advanced, and some of the best offer built-in reinforced channels with a felt-like material known as wool pile. Wool pile helps create a stronger seal, which prevents air infiltration in a wider range of situations. Installing these windows is a simple process that can often be completed in a day.

Instructions

    • 1

Hold the storm window against the inner lip on the outside trim of the window you want to install it on. Ensure that the storm window fits snugly against the trim and covers the entire window without any gaps.

    • 2

Push the storm window tight against the sill to ensure the wool pile seal at the bottom makes good contact with the trim. Screw the storm window to the trim by first inserting 3/4-inch self-tapping screws into the pre-punched holes in the installation fins and tightening them in place. Attach the storm window at a minimum of three points on each side, one each at the top and bottom and one at a point near the center of the window. Use more attachment points if the storm window is very large.

Caulk the storm window from the inside with latex caulk. Begin at the bottom and be careful not to caulk over the drainage holes. Lift the caulk gun when you reach these points. Caulk the sides of the windows and finish with the top.
