How to Install a Milgard Montecito Sliding Window With Fins

The installation of Milgard Montecito sliding vinyl windows with flush fins follows the guidelines of the American Architectural Manufacturers Association. If you are installing your window in new construction, you have to flash the new frame before you put the window into place. If you are replacing a window with a Milgard Montecito window, you need to remove everything inside the existing window frame before you begin.

Instructions

  1. Installing in a New Frame

    • 1

Apply self-adhering flashing to the window sill. Cut it where necessary with a utility knife. The flashing should extend 9 inches beyond the vertical jamb flashing on both sides of the window. The top of the flashing should be flush with the window frame. Leave the bottom of the flashing and the flashing on either side of the jamb unsealed so you can tuck underlayment underneath it.

    • 2

Apply window sealant to the interior of the window flange on all sides.

    • 3

Place the window into the frame and check to ensure that it is square and plumb. Shim it if necessary. Use a screwdriver to attach the window to the frame with the Milgard Monticito fasteners that come with your model of window. The window has pre-punched holes.

    • 4

Apply a continuous bead of sealant at the top and side edges of the window. Do not apply sealant above the window beyond the sealant on the jamb. Continue the jamb sealant 8 1/2 inches above the header.

    • 5

Place the jamb flashing onto the sealant. The jamb flashing should stop a half-inch short of the header and the sill. Do not adhere the bottom 9 inches of flashing so you can slip underlayment beneath it.

    • 6

Place the header flashing onto the sealant. Extend it 1 inch beyond the jamb flashing on either side.

    Installing as a Replacement Window

    • 7

Measure the window opening to ensure that your window will fit into the space. Your new Milgard Montecito window should be 1/4-inch shorter and wider.

    • 8

Measure the window space from corner to corner to ensure that the opening is square. The measurements should be identical. The flush fin of the new window should fit outside of the window frame.

    • 9

Remove everything except the outer frame of the existing window. Fit the new window into the opening to ensure that the sill gives it good support. Use your level to ensure that it is square and plumb. Ensure that the window slides properly and locks. Remove the window.

    • 10

Apply a continuous 3/8-inch bead of window sealant on the header, jambs and sill where the new window will fit. Leave a 1-inch opening at any weep holes.

    • 11

Place the new window in the frame on top of the bead of sealant. Check to make sure the window is still level and plumb. Use a screwdriver to attach the window to the frame with the Milgard Monticito fasteners that come with your model of window. The window has pre-punched holes.

    • 12

Apply another bead of sealant around the exterior of the window’s flush fin on all four sides. Do not cover weep holes.
