Window Film Installation Tools

Window film can provide you with added privacy and, to some extent, security and protection from the sun. You can install window film on your own, provided you use the proper tools. Using the correct tools will ensure that your installation goes smoothly and without a hitch. You may already have some of the tools in your house; however, you can also buy window film installation tools from most home improvement stores.

  1. Tape Measure

    • Use a tape measure to measure your windows.

Measuring is crucial in installing window film. Often the window film comes in rolls that are not the exact measurement of your windows. In addition, odd-shaped windows, such as circular windows, arched windows or palladium windows, may require extra cuts to conform to the shape of the windows. Using a tape measure will ensure that you make the correct measurements.

    Templates

    • Use craft paper to make templates.

Use templates to trace odd-shaped windows. Attach the templates to the window with masking tape so that you can trace the shape. You can use newspaper, craft paper, Manila paper or wrapping paper as your templates. Once you cut your templates, use them as your guide in making cuts on the actual window film.

    Utility Knife

    • Use a utility knife to cut your window films.

Use a sharp utility knife to cut the window film. A utility knife will let you cut smooth, straight edges. Use a guide, such as a straight ruler to help you make long, straight cuts.

    Spray Bottle

    • Use a spray bottle to apply the solution.

Use an application solution to install window film. A spray bottle comes in handy in applying the solution on the surface of your windows. A spray bottle releases the right amount of solution without causing too much dripping on the window. See that the windows are dust free and clean so that the application solution will not leave any dirty or cloudy streaks.

    Squeegee

    • Use a squeegee to remove air bubbles that may form.

Use a squeegee to apply the window film on top of the window glass. The squeegee will remove the excess solution and air bubbles.

    Edging Tool or Ruler

    • An edge ruler is your guide in making straight cuts.

An edging tool or ruler will flatten the edges of the window film. The tool is also useful as a guide in cutting the excess window film.

    Lint-free Cloth or Sponge

    • Use a sponge to remove excess solution.

A lint-free cloth or sponge can remove smudges and excess solutions on top of the window film to ensure a clean finished look.

    Miscellaneous Tools

    • A credit card comes in handy in removing small bubbles.

Scraper blades help to scrape off any rough or sticky items on the surface of the glass that can cause bubbles to appear. In some cases, you can also use a credit card to remove small air bubbles that a squeegee cannot remove after applying the window film.
