Windows on a stucco home may need to be replaced from time to time for various reasons, including improving a home's energy efficiency or appearance. However, you will need to remove areas of stucco to facilitate the removal of the old window, and then patch any damage to the stucco after the window is replaced. The new stucco patches will need two coats -- one a base and the other a thinner finish coat that properly bonds and matches the original stucco.
Remove the window to be replaced. This may involve simply unscrewing it and disassembling the frame or using a hammer and pry bar to remove it from the window frame jamb. This is where the stucco may get damaged or removed. Set the old window aside or throw away as appropriate.
Place the new window in the center of this open window jamb and attach according to the manufacturer's directions, using any shims as necessary to make it level and tight. Spray the foam window insulation around the window frame where it meets the jamb. Let this foam cure before receding, per directions.
Cut off excess dried insulating foam and clean around this area. Sand and dust off areas where the new stucco will be applied.
Apply the matching pre-mixed stucco with the trowel wherever necessary. Scoop the material onto the flat edge of the trowel and spread it over the surface where the stucco has been damaged during the removal and installation of the window. Float the new stucco with the trowel blade into the areas being repaired, leaving a smooth surface for the final finishing coat. Allow this base coat to cure at least one day or more depending on weather conditions. Mist these areas with the water bottle on at least two separate occasions to allow the materials to bond properly as they cure.
Apply the thinner (1/8 inch or less) top coat with the trowel at a sharp angle, feathering it into the existing stucco. Match the thickness and appearance, including adding any swirling or ridges as necessary, to resemble the old stucco.
Allow the stucco to cure completely. Cure times will vary depending on the thickness of the new stucco, temperature, humidity and other weather conditions. Caulk any holes or gaps where the new stucco meets the window.
