Window darkening films can provide privacy, protection from ultraviolet rays and energy savings, depending on the type of film you select. Darkening window films are installed on the interior side of a window. The films are designed to be removed so you can replace them or readjust them if you make an error during installation. While installing window film requires attention to detail, it is a home improvement task that you can easily take on as a do-it-yourself project.
Wash the interior side of the window with window cleaner, and wipe it off with a paper towel. Make sure the window is free of streaks and is completely clean.
Remove the window film backing, and align the film over the interior side of the window with the backing side facing the window.
Run the squeegee over the surface of the film to apply it evenly to the window, making sure that all of the bubbles and ridges are smoothed out of the film.
Trim around the perimeter of the window with a utility knife to remove the excess film.
