Unlike single pane windows, which provide only a layer of glass between the outdoor weather and the inside of your home, dual- and triple-pane windows increase insulation with additional panes. Between each surface is air that also adds to your home’s insulation, which makes triple pane windows more efficient than dual pane windows. To determine whether your home has dual pane or triple pane windows, a visual inspection may be all you need.
Look at the inside edge of the window where the glass touches the frame. If the window is dual pane, you will see two sheets of glass entering the frame. If the window is triple pane, you will see three sheets of glass entering the frame.
Visit a retailer that sells both dual pane and triple pane windows to compare them side-by-side. This will give you a better idea of what to look for when you get home.
Check the frame around the window for a small product label. Here, you may be able to determine the manufacturer and the product number. Many retailers have manuals available on their websites that you can access with the product number. The manual will provide information on the amount of panes your window has.
