Andersen Windows Installation

Andersen offers many different types of windows including double hung, sliders, casement and awning. These windows are made of vinyl or wood. The most important thing to remember when installing Andersen windows is to measure the rough opening so the proper size window can be purchased for installation. The windows are available in sizes to fit any opening and no matter what type of window, installing them follows the same basic procedure.

Things You'll Need

  • Tape measure
  • Putty knife
  • Rags
  • Caulk gun
  • Silicone sealant
  • Screws
  • Drill
  • Level
  • Shims
  • Hammer
  • Backer rod
  • Utility knife

Instructions

    • 1

Run a tape measure across the center of the opening where the window will be installed. Measure from one side of the jamb to the the other directly in the center and record the measurement for the width. Measure the height from the bottom of the window sill to the top of the opening in the center and record that measurement.

    • 2

Clean out the opening with a putty knife. Scrape off any excess glue or caulking that may remain from the previous window. Wipe down the area with a clean rag. Run a bead of silicone sealant along the bottom of the window sill. Move two inches toward the exterior of the house and run another bead of sealant the same way.

    • 3

Set the window into the opening from the outside of the house. Place the window on top of the silicone at the bottom and push down firmly to help adhere it in place. Insert two-inch screws through the pre-drilled holes in the side jamb at each corner of the window. Screw them in with a power drill and do not tighten them completely to allowroom for the window to adjust and become level, if necessary.

    • 4

Set a level horizontally across the window sill to verify that the window is level. Hammer shims into the corners of the window between the jamb and the window frame until the window is plumb and square. Insert screws into the provided holes along the jamb to completely secure the window in place.

    • 5

Insert backer rod into the opening between the jamb and frame around the entire window. Push it into place with a putty knife until it is snug in between. Apply a bead of silicone sealant over the backer rod to further seal the opening. Cut off the excess shims on both sides of the house with a utility knife. Open and close the window to make sure it is operating properly.
