How to Buy Curtain Rods

When you redecorate a room in your home, window treatments are usually the last item for consideration. They vary in function, with some addressing privacy concerns and light control and others simply tying a color scheme together. Whatever route you choose, you have to buy the right curtain rods. The choices are limitless, but if you follow these steps, you can find the best match for your curtains.

Instructions

    • 1

Measure your window. This is the most important step in buying curtain rods because you need the width in order to size your rods. After measuring the width of the window from casing to casing, add 2 to 5 inches depending on how much of the wall you want to cover.

    • 2

Choose an adjustable rod. Even though you've already measured, buying an adjustable rod allows flexibility once you get it home. You can decide to lengthen the rod to add drama and width to the window, and an adjustable rod forgives measuring mistakes.

Consider fabric weight. The type of curtain rod you buy depends on the weight of the treatment. For example, sheers do well on any type of curtain rod because they're light, but a heavy drapery needs a substantial rod with brackets.

    • 4

Decide between function and fashion. Before you head to the store, think about whether you want your curtain rod to simply hold your curtains in place or act as part of your decor.

    • 5

Layer your hardware properly. If your window treatments are made up of more than one layer--for example, sheers paired with drapes--make sure that you can hang both the rods you buy together on the wall.

    • 6

Select rods with the correct diameter. Not all curtains fit on all curtain rods. Sometimes, the top hem isn't wide enough to slip onto the rod, so check it before you buy it.

Remember the finishing touches. If you're buying curtain rods that add to the room's decor, don't forget to look at finials. They come in a wide variety of sizes, colors and shapes, and can really add to the look of your window treatment.
