Instructions

  1. Installing Storm Windows and Lowering Your Electric Bill

    • 1

Measure the existing windows themselves (do not include the frame, shutters, or any other “extras”). Measure the top of the windows first, then the bottom, then the left side, then the right side, and last measure corner to corner. Record the measurements.

    • 2

Determine the type of storm windows you want to purchase (exterior or interior.) Exterior storm windows can be removed during the summer months and stored, thus allowing them to be used over and over again for several years. However, since they are exposed to the elements, they will need replacing sooner than interior.

    • 3

Purchase the storm windows you have chosen, as well as any screws that will be needed for installation.

    • 4

If the storm window unit—in other words, the frame and window itself—are separate, attach the storm window frame to the existing window frame. Most storm windows will already have the screw holes in the frame.

    • 5

Fit the storm window into the storm window frame.

    • 6

On exterior windows, caulk around the storm window frame and around screw holes. However, DO NOT caulk around the bottom holes. These are not screw holes; they are ventilation holes to decrease condensation.
