How to Rescreen a Window

Instructions

    • 1

Measure your screen before you go to the home improvement store. Buy just as much as you need. Window screen comes in different widths. Make sure the screen you buy is about 3/4" wider than the inside dimension of the screen. The length should be about an inch longer than what you need.

    • 2

Cut the screen to fit the window, making sure you have made allowances for the screen that will fit in the grooves on the top, bottom and sides of the screen.

    • 3

Remove the old screen by taking the screwdriver and lifting the end of the spline and pulling it out. Remove the old screen and dispose of it.

    • 4

Lay the screen over the window, making sure that there is at least 1/2" excess on all sides.

    • 5

Start at the bottom first. Making sure the screen is completely straight, start rolling the spline into the groove. It might help to use small pieces of tape to hold the screen in place while you put in the first side of the screen.

    • 6

Take the new screen, pull it taut and tape it down at the top. Make sure it is even and there is no slack from bottom to top.

    • 7

Start with the next side and use the spline and the spline tool to put the spline inside the screen. Once you get to the top of the screen, remove the tape and insert the screen.

The last side will be the test of a good, taut screen. Make sure that you pull the screen tightly while you insert the screen into the frame. Remove the excess screen around the edges using the utility knife.
