How to Run a Vegetable Stand in the Summer

Roadside vegetable stands are enjoying a new popularity. Many consumers see the advantages of buying food locally instead of getting it from grocery stores, to which the food is shipped thousands of miles. If you have a farm or plot of land to grow ample vegetables, consider setting up a roadside stand where you can earn a little extra money from selling your home grown goodies.

Instructions

  1. How to Run a Vegetable Stand

    • 1

Find a location that gets plenty of traffic, and where people can park their vehicles safely and close to your vegetable stand.

    • 2

Contact the local government of your chosen location to see if they will allow you to sell agricultural products from a roadside stand. If they require a permit or business license, follow their instructions to do so.

    • 3

Make a bright banner advertising your produce stand. Neon tag board works well, and poster paints can be used for the lettering.

    • 4

Set your table up and arrange the fruits and vegetables in an attractive way. We eat with our eyes. Make sure that your produce is not bruised or damaged. It will draw flies, which is a real buying deterrent for people.

    • 5

Keep extra produce in the coolers, so it does not wilt or degrade throughout the course of the day. Sweet corn should be kept in a cooler constantly, because the sugars turn to starch at room temperature once it is picked. Tomatoes should never be kept at temperatures below 55 degrees F because their sugars turn to starch below that temperature.
