Stained Glass Window Installation Instructions

Stained-glass windows can be a beautiful addition to any home. They can add a touch of character and class when done properly. Fortunately, stained glass windows are not difficult to install if you have any sort of background in home improvement. The easiest way to install stained glass is to place it over top of a current window, which can also allow for easy removal if you so desire.

Understand that the stained glass must be of the same size as an existing window if you wish to place it within a window in your home. If it is not the same size, you will need to contact someone skilled in the art of window cutting to either resize an existing window or put in a new window frame.

Once you are sure the windows match in size, clean both with glass-cleaning supplies. When they are dry, you will be ready to attach the stained glass.

    • 3

Place the stained glass up against the existing window. You want to place it on the interior of the house rather than the exterior, for weathering purposes and for easiest removal.

Using a putty knife, add caulk all the way around the window. Hold it in place while the caulk dries. Rather than standing there yourself and holding it the entire time, it might be easiest to gently insert nails throughout the frame that you can easily remove later--or you can place painter's tape across the window.

Once the caulk has dried completely, remove whichever tool you used to hold it into place while it dried. The caulk will hold the window firmly in place, but it is also easy to remove later. You simply loosen the caulk with a knife to remove the window should you need to do so.
