How to Apply Window Tinting Cling Film

We live in the Pacific Northwest where only 15% of homes have a/c. Here's how to help cool your home during the next heat wave without having to spend $$ on electricity.

Things You'll Need

  • Mild soap and water
  • Spray bottle for water
  • Window squeegee (shoppers card will do in a pinch)
  • Reusable cling window tint (available in the auto section of your local big box store). The lower the percentage, the darker the tint. We used 35%.
  • Clean, dry towels.
  • Scissors or safety razor blade knife.
  • An extra hand to help will make it easier!

Instructions

    • 1

Wash window to be tinted with a mild soapy solution. Don't use ammonia-based or vinegar products or the film won't stick and can cause unsightly bubbles. Rinse well, removing all soap residue, dirt and debris.

    • 2

Unroll window film and remove from paper. Press top left corner of film into top left corner of window. Have someone hold it in place for you or duct tape will do if you are by yourself. Smooth across and down the window until approximate size is reached. Carefully cut to size.

Continue to smooth out any bubbles with your hand, a squeegee or a shoppers/credit type card. For a longer-lasting hold and less chance of bubbling, spray the window with water first. The wetter the window, the easier it is to smooth out any air bubbles. Trim off any excess.

To remove, carefully pull off of window starting in the upper corner. You can use this product next summer by rolling it loosely and storing it in a cool dry place.
