Procedures For Installing Windows in a Wood Frame House

The procedures for installing windows in a wood frame house are basically the same whether it is a replacement window or new installation. There may be some variation in terms of preparing the rough opening. If you are building a new home, the window installation is a major stage of the process. Replacing windows in an existing wood house is an excellent way to make your home more comfortable and lower heating and cooling costs.
  1. Considerations

    • Find out what the local building codes are for window installation in your area. You have a wide variety of types and styles of windows to choose. Some choices include single-hung, double-hung, casements, sliding, awning, hopper and fixed windows. The three most common materials used for window manufacturing are wood, aluminum and vinyl. The most common types of window installed in a wood frame house are single or double-hung window. The most popular material is vinyl.

Make sure that the window measurements are accurate. Measure the width at the top, middle and bottom. Measure the height from the header to the sill. You won’t be able to return custom built windows that don’t fit.

    Rough Opening Guidelines

    • Make sure that the rough opening is straight and level. The rough opening is the measurement between the header and the trimmer studs. If you are installing wood windows, add 2 inches to the width and height of the wood windows for the rough opening dimensions. For vinyl and aluminum windows, make the rough opening the same dimensions as the window. Get this part right, or you will have an opening that is too small or too large for a correct fit. Read the window manufacturer’s instructions for exact specifications for rough openings.

If you are installing new replacement windows of the same dimensions as the old windows, remove the casing and the window stops. You can re-use the trim and window stops if you don’t damage the components. Remove the old window frame; you may have to cut the nails with your reciprocating saw. Examine the framing for damage or rot and replace any damage. Straighten and level the opening, including the window sill. Install flashing and drip cap per the manufacturer’s instructions.

    Installation Guidelines

    • Apply some sealant around the window frame and place the window in the opening. Insert a nail partway into the frame to old the window in place. Level the top of the window. Move to straighten the sides of the window. Measure the window diagonally from corner to corner to check that the window is square. If the measurements are not the same, adjust the window to the right or left until the numbers are exact.

Once the frame is square, follow the method recommended by the manufacturer for securing the window. Caulk around the windows stops at the top and on the sides. Insert wood shims between the window frame and the rough opening to tighten the frame.

Place the shims near the screw holes. If the opening is too large, you may have to install a 1 x 4 or 2 x 4 board to fill the gap. Caulk around the exterior of the window frame. Install fiberglass or spray foam insulation in open cavities.
