Directions for Installing White Traverse Rods

Traverse rods help extend the life of your curtains by eliminating the need to pull on the fabric for opening and closing each day. Textile fiber becomes worn with continued usage and over time it can deteriorate. A white traverse rod is a good option if your wall is a light color. The sliders hold the curtain in position while a pull cord moves the sliders back and forth.
  1. Bracket Mounting Tips

    • The brackets contained in the package of a white traverse rod should also be white. This prevents the darker color from showing underneath the rod. Measure the combined curtain width to calculate the horizontal bracket placement. Pleated curtains are measured by placing the panels side by side on a flat surface. Measure from the left pleat to the right pleat and subtract 1/2 inch per panel in the set. The answer is the width of your bracket placement.

Drill the holes for mounting and use hollow-wall anchors with screws if there is no wall stud at the bracket location. The anchors disperse the weight of the bracket and provide a more secure attachment to the wall. Use enough brackets to properly supprt the white traverse rods. The rod should be supported every 40 inches. This prevents the rod from sagging or falling under the weight of heavy curtains.

A common mistake when installing traverse rods is the use of a carpenter level. This should be avoided. The white traverse rod must be installed parallel to the ceiling. Use a measuring tape to determine the parallel position. Measure from the ceiling and go downward to the location of the rod for the first bracket. This is your vertical placement measurement. Move to the width location of the second bracket. Measure from the ceiling and go downward the distance of your vertical measurement. This is the location to place your second bracket. The rod and the ceiling will look straight.

Tips for Installing the Traverse Rod

    • Long rods will require at least two people to install the white traverse rod.

Remove the rod from the packaging and check the functionality of the sliders, cords and carriages. The sliders should move freely without bumps or jerks. If they do not move freely inspect the rod for any packaging debris that may be in the track.

Place a stepladder at each bracket. Working at the eye level with the bracket will make installing the rod easier. Each person holds one end of the rod and moves to the window. While on the stepladder, lift the rod in the position and place the bracket notch of the rod on the bracket. Rotate the rod downward and "click" the lower hook in place by pressing firmly on the rod.
