How to Fit New Cord to Curtain Tracks

Over time, curtain cords can become stretched, frayed or dingy, compromising their ability to function properly. Replace your old cord with a new one to restore the overall performance of your curtains. Curtain tracks work on a pulley system, and with knowledge of the correct path that a cord has to travel through this system, the new cord can be easily installed. To work on your curtain track, detach the track from the wall, remove the curtains from the curtain slides, and place it upside down on a flat surface.

Instructions

    • 1

Begin feeding the new cord into the curtain track through the end that that the cord normally hangs from. Slip the end of the cord around and through the initial pulley system.

    • 2

Grab hold of the end of the cord, and pull it out and along the curtain track.

    • 3

Slide it underneath the first series curtain slides. You will then come to the first master carrier.

    • 4

Slip the cord under the first master carrier and out the left-hand slot in the middle of the master carrier. A paper clip or tweezers can be used to grab the end of the cord and bring it up through the slot.

    • 5

Pull the cord out and tie a double knot in the end. This is so the cord will not pull back out of the slot in the master carrier.

    • 6

Pull the cord in the reverse direction, so the knot is snug against the master carrier.

    • 7

Take the other end of the cord that is hanging down, double it up, and pull the end through the pulley system.

    • 8

Slide the cord under the first series of curtain slides.

    • 9

Slide it under the first master carrier. Grab hold of the end of the cord, and pull it out from the other end of the master carrier.

    • 10

Slip the cord under the second master carrier and out the left-hand slot in the middle. Insert the cord back through the second master carrier by threading it into the second slot.

    • 11

Slide the cord under the second series of curtain slides.

    • 12

Run the cord down between the pulleys at the opposite end of the curtain track. Bring the cord back up and around the outside of the pulleys, around the top of the pulleys and back into the curtain track. You are now running your cord in the other direction.

    • 13

Slide the cord under the curtain slides and under the second master carrier.

    • 14

Slip the cord under the first master carrier and out the right-hand slot.

    • 15

Pull the cord out, and tie a double knot in the end.

    • 16

Pull out the slack out of the cord, so the knot is sitting snugly against the master carrier.

    • 17

Turn the track over, and pull the cord to ensure it is working properly. Your curtain can now be reattached to the track and the track reattached to the wall.
