DIY Window Well Covers

Window wells are placed in front of below-grade window openings. The bottom of the well drains water away from the window and prevents moisture from entering the basement. The tops of window well openings are usually uncovered, but installing a cover keeps rain and debris out of the well. A hinged cover is attached to the home with screws while a stationary bubble cover calls for mounting clips.

Instructions

  1. Attach Hinged Cover

    • 1

Align the hinge against the house.

    • 2

Place a level on top of the hinge to level the window well cover. Mark where the screws will attach the cover to the house with a felt-tipped marker.

    • 3

Pre-drill the hole for each screw with a 1/8-inch masonry bit.

    • 4

Apply a bead of exterior-grade caulk to the side of the hinge that will be attached to the house.

    • 5

Place the hinged window well cover in position and attach by installing screws through the hinge and into the hole at each pre-drilled location. Tighten each screw securely with a drill equipped with a screwdriver bit.

    Attach Bubble Cover

    • 6

Place the bubble cover in position on the window well.

    • 7

Slide the mounting clips into position on the back of the cover. There should be two clips for the top and at least one clip for each side.

    • 8

Insert a felt-tipped marker into the screw hole on each clip, marking where it will be attached to the house.

    • 9

Pre-drill the hole for each screw with a 1/8-inch drill bit at each mark.

    • 10

Reposition the cover with the clips aligned with the pre-drilled holes. Insert screws through the clips and into the holes. Tighten each with a drill equipped with a screwdriver bit.

    Clips on Window Well

    • 11

Center the window well cover on the window well rim.

    • 12

Mark a location for the hardware for each window well clip to be installed. Usually, there will be one or two for each side and two or three for the front. Space the location for the clips evenly on each side.

    • 13

Hold the hardware for the window clips in position over the marked location for each clip. Align the top of the clip hardware with the top of the window well. Make a mark through each screw hole with a felt-tipped marker.

    • 14

Drill a hole at the location for each screw hole in the window well.

    • 15

Attach the clip hardware with the supplied nut and bolt. Tighten with a ratchet, pliers or wrenches.

    • 16

Align the window well cover on the window well. Mark the location for each clip on the window well cover.

    • 17

Drill the holes through the cover aligned with the clip hardware and insert locking clips through the holes.
