Dormer Window Ideas

A dormer window not only adds interest to your home's roof line, it can add in a little additional living space inside. Dormer windows come in a variety of styles. In looking for ideas, consider the different styles and which style will best suit your house. Consider also the size of the window you'll be adding and whether you'll be adding one or multiple windows.
  1. Shed Dormer Window

    • A nice, wide shed dormer window fits nicely with a ranch style (spreading) home. The window addition adds additional height to the room and more natural lighting. The sides of the dormer window give you the opportunity to add a new building material to your home for added texture. So you might have shingles or siding added above a brick or stone house. Use of a flat shed dormer window adds even more space while making the house itself appear taller.

    Gabled Dormer Window

    • Smaller, gabled dormer windows are very popular and add a Victorian look to your home. They work particularly well with homes that have at least one high peak. Add multiple gabled windows to create a "House of 7 Gables" look, or a house of 3 gables look. The gabled dormer windows look especially nice with the addition of a flower box at the base. These windows can have a variety of roof lines from peaked to rounded. For interest, you can mix the shapes and have both peaked and rounded dormer windows.

    Hipped Dormer Window

    • Hipped dormers are typically designed to maintain the roof line's original pitch and shape so it'll appear as if it were part of the original structure without distracting from your home's design. They work nicely in attics in which there isn't enough light from existing windows.

    Eyebrow Dormer Window

    • Add in a curved, half-circular eyebrow dormer window to give your home and roof added interest. These work best in home designs where there is already something else in the architecture that reflects or inspires the eyebrow shape. They are especially appealing centered in a dominating peak.
