Prepare the Window

  Remove the window from its packaging and inspect the unit for damage. Place the nailing fin in an upright position, but do not apply the nailing fin corner gaskets.

  Apply a 1 1/2-inch long bead of construction adhesive in the channel on the exterior jamb 6 inches from each corner and 1 foot apart along the channel if the window has installation brackets. Place the installation brackets over the sealant and insert two included screws into the holes on the bracket. Turn clockwise with a screwdriver to secure.

  Apply structural brackets on both sides of the mullion joints on factory mulled windows. Insert two of the included screws through the holes on the bracket. Tighten with a screwdriver. Install the jamb extension according to the manufacturer’s instructions.

Position the Window

  Position the window in the center of the rough opening. Place a level on the sides, top and bottom of the frame. Insert shims under the jamb to level the window as needed.

  Use a hammer to drive 2-inch roofing nails through the jamb nailing fin and into the rough opening 6 inches or less from the head jamb. Fasten the top brackets, if applicable, according to the manufacturer’s directions.

  Bend the structural brackets around the framing member and secure with #8 X 1 5/8 inch screws, if applicable. Insert the screws at a 15-degree angle from the window.

Square the Window

  Square the frame in the rough opening from the interior of the home. Measure from the top right corner to the bottom left corner of the window with a tape measure. Measure from the top left corner to the bottom right corner of the window. Insert shims between the jambs as needed so that the measurements are identical.

  Secure the lower corners of the nailing fin with nails. Insert shims between the rough opening and frame 4 to 6 inches from the bottom corners. Ensure that the window is still square. Install shims at 15-inch intervals. Install additional shims at the lock points, check rails and meeting stiles.

  Measure the head jamb, sill and the center of the unit to ensure that the window is square. Adjust the shims if needed. Open and close the window to ensure that it operates properly.

  Secure the frame by driving 2-inch roofing nails through the nailing fin. Place the nails 6 inches from each corner, and every 6 inches in between. Secure the remaining structural brackets with the included screws, if applicable.

  Place fiberglass insulation around the interior perimeter of the window. Insert the backer rod in the rough opening and apply sealant.

Secure and Seal the Window

  Position the nailing fin corner gaskets on the corners of the nailing fin. Secure according to the directions on the back of the gasket.

  Install a drip cap on windows that do not have a J-Channel. If the window has a J-Channel, proceed to Step 3. Position the drip cap on the head jamb so that it extends 1/8 inch over the edge of the window. Apply sealant on each side of the cap where it contacts the window and sheathing.

  Place strips of self-sealing adhesive flashing on the jamb and over the air barrier. Cut the strips at the head jamb and fold the flashing over the exterior of the home. Place additional adhesive flashing over the head jamb and sheathing to cover the flashing on the jambs.

  Fold the air barrier on the head jamb over the head jamb flashing. Apply seam seal tape over the diagonal cut in the air barrier. Ensure that the seal tape laps over the casing. Apply tape to the seams and fasteners above the window.

  Apply sealant to the exterior of the casing around the perimeter of the window. Open the window and remove the shipping blocks or clips.
