Measure the height and width of the window you want to tint. Multiply the height by the width to determine the area for the window. Do not tint double pane windows larger than 40 square feet.
Purchase enough tinting film for your window in a window tint designated safe for double pane windows. Lighter tints are safer for double pane windows due to the extra heat buildup. Darker tints can cause the seals around the glass to fail, leading to leaking and glass breakage.
Measure 1 quart of distilled water into a spray bottle and add ½ teaspoon baby shampoo. Screw the spray nozzle onto the top of the bottle.
Spray the water solution onto the window interior, cleaning thoroughly to create a spotless surface for the tint. Scrub the area immediately surrounding the glass area with a toothbrush to reach all crevices. Remove any stickers or other items on the interior of the window with a razor blade scraper, including any sticky residue.
Dry the glass and surrounding area with lint-free paper towels until all water is removed. Press the towels into the crevices to make sure they are completely dry.
Lay out a clean drop cloth to protect your flooring while cutting and spraying the water solution. Cover the area under the window as well to prevent extra solution from wetting your floor during the tinting application.
Place the tinting film face down on the drop cloth and measure the correct amount to completely cover the window. Add a 1-inch margin on all sides to allow for measurement, cutting or placement errors. Cut the film using a razor blade or utility knife.
Remove the liner from the back of the film to expose the adhesive. Work with one piece at a time if you need more than one section to cover your window.
Spray the entire back of the film with your water solution. Cover the area completely so the film will be easier to apply. Position the wet side of the film onto the window, adjusting as necessary and removing foreign objects like hair immediately.
Spray the surface of the tint after it is adjusted to where you want it. Squeegee the entire window from the center out to the corners to remove excess solution and secure the film into place.
Place a trim guide or other straight edge into the corners of the window and trim the excess edges from the film with a razor blade or utility knife. Spray the window lightly with the water solution and squeegee again until all bubbles and excess water are removed.
