Curtains & Valance Installation

Windows look naked without some kind of shade, blinds or curtains in them. Aside from the aesthetic reasoning behind installing curtains and valances, they provide privacy and shade from the sun, which can overheat rooms in summer and fade furniture upholstery. Curtains, valances and curtain rod sets purchased from department, big box and home improvement stores are simple to install with common household tools. With the rods installed, you'll be able to switch the curtains and valances any time you want to change your interior decór.

Instructions

    • 1

Measure the width of your window, then add 4 inches to this measurement. This will tell you how long the curtain rod for the curtains needs to be. Add 8 inches to get the measurement for the valance curtain rod.

    • 2

Purchase appropriately-sized curtain rods. The rod for the curtain should stick out from your window by about 2 inches, while the valance rod must be about 4 inches out from the window.

    • 3

Install the hardware brackets for the curtain rods using screws and a screwdriver. Place the brackets for the rod for the curtains 2 inches from either side of the top of the window frame. Use a level to align the brackets on both sides of the window. Place the hardware for the valence rod 4 inches from either side of the window frame and 1 to 2 inches above the first curtain rod's hardware.

    • 4

Slide the curtains onto the curtain rod. Place the rod into the brackets as instructed by the manufacturer. You may need to install screws or clips you to keep the rod from moving. See the instructions included in the packaging for details.

    • 5

Slide the valance onto the valence rod. As with the first rod, follow the instructions included with the packaging for detailed information on how to secure the rod to the hardware. Many rods will simply slip onto hooks on the brackets.

    • 6

Adjust the curtains and valance to center them and the ruffles created by scrunching them onto the rods. If desired, tie the curtains back with curtain ties or leave them closed.
