What Can I Put on House Windows So I Can See Out, But No One Can See In?

Sometimes it is pleasant to throw open heavy curtains or blinds and look at the world outside your window. However, depending on where you live and what sort of traffic is outside your window, you might not want people peering in and invading your own privacy. Luckily, windows can be treated to provide a solution.
  1. Privacy Film

    • The primary product used to create this effect is known as privacy window film. This film is applied to your window similarly to how window tinting is applied to a car. However, once applied, you will be able to see out of your window, but people outside your house will not be able to see in. Use products specifically created for residential use if you want to increase your home's privacy. Don't use similar automotive grade products.

    Mechanism

    • Privacy film works like a two-way mirror. Light that hits the window is reflected back away from the house. The reflection prevents people from being able to see into the home but allows you to see out clearly. Films are available that have a shiny surface when viewed from the outside, while some have subtler, matte options.

    Night Time

    • The problem with two-way films that you put on windows is that at night, the effect is going to be reversed. This is because at night the primary light source striking the windows will be inside your home rather than coming from the sun. This makes it very easy for people to see into your home at night unless you install an exterior light source that strikes the windows to dim them.

    Disadvantages

    • Other disadvantages caused by privacy film should be considered before you install it in your home. For instance, because the product puts a layer, and often a darker one than the color of your window, between the interior of your house and the sun, even with your curtains wide open the amount of light actually entering your home will be reduced.
