How to Remove Window Stools

A window stool does not serve any purpose other than adding a decorative touch to your window frame. This is why some windows have them and others do not. If you prefer the look of a window frame without the stool, you can easily remove it. The stool is the first piece installed during window framing. Therefore, the two frame sides must be removed to extract the stool. Once the stool is gone, replace the frame around the window and cut a new length of frame to fit where the stool was.

Instructions

    • 1

Set the edge of a 4-inch putty knife's blade in the corner where the window's side frame meets the wall. Insert a pry bar underneath the frame, next to the putty knife. Pry the frame off the wall, using the putty knife to push off of instead of the drywall, to prevent damage. Work your way down both frame sides to remove them from the wall.

Run a finger along the stool's surface to find the nails holding it in place. These nails will often be near the stool's back edge. Set a nail punch on one of the nail's heads. Hit the nail punch with a hammer to drive the nail all the way through the stool.

Move the nail punch to the next nail head and hit that nail through as well. Continue until all nails have been punched through the stool.

Pull the stool away from the wall. If it still seems stuck, open the window and cut the stool in two with a reciprocating saw. Be careful not to cut through the window's sill. Then pull each half of the stool out separately.
