How to Deaden Sound on a Patio Window

A patio can be a private and peaceful place to relax. However, not all patios are in a location that allows you to do so. If you live by a busy street or have noisy neighbors, it may be necessary to deaden sound coming through your patio windows. Doing so will also prevent you from bothering your neighbors in the case that you like to make a lot of noise while out on your patio. Try one or all of the methods below to help deaden sound entering and exiting your patio windows.

Instructions

    • 1

Add a storm window to the outside of the patio window. The extra layer of glass will help to deaden sound and prevent as much sound from being able to transfer through your patio window.

    • 2

Hang heavy curtains around the patio window. The heavier the material, the better it will be at deadening sound.

    • 3

Create a plug for the window to help deaden sound that is coming through it. Measure the height, width and depth of your window and cut a piece of foam slightly larger than the height and width of the window but slightly smaller than the depth. Place the foam plug into the window, leaving some empty space between the back of the foam and the front of the window. This dead air space between the foam and window will help to further deaden sound. The slightly oversized piece of foam will compress and hold itself in place once pushed into the window frame.

Replace the original patio window with a soundproof window for maximum sound deadening effectiveness.
