How to Use ASTM E1300

The ASTM acronym describes the American Society for Testing and Materials. This organization develops standards used internationally by businesses and industries to help companies improve the quality of their products when they use ASTM standards. Manufacturers, engineers and others use standards for ASTM E1300 to calculate if the glass used in specific applications is appropriate and meets the building code standards for loads and resistances.

Instructions

    • 1

Use the standards created under ASTM E1300 to calculate load resistances of various building glass types. This includes the multiple combinations of types of glass for low-energy glass sealed and insulated as individual items. Engineers calculate loads to ensure that glass provides the needed strength and resistances in various building applications, such as in corners or along exterior walls.

    • 2

Apply these standards to sloped and vertical glass and glazing in buildings that have designs loads related to snow, wind and weight factors of the building itself. Use these standards when working with rectangular glass found in buildings that use glass in lateral support positions on two-, three- and four-sided support situations.

    • 3

Employ the standards to determine glass deflection and the needed types of glass for use in buildings requiring lateral support and specific resistance factors established by building codes.

    • 4

Do not apply the ASTM E1300 standard to glass shelving, glass floor panels, aquariums, structural glass or glass used in balustrades.

    • 5

Do not use these standards for glass with changed characteristics. This includes glass changed by etching, sandblasting, drilling, notching or other treatments that alter glass strength.
