How to Replace a Double Hung Window With a Single Hung

Many older houses are fitted with double-hung windows that don't do a good job of keeping the heat in or the cold out. Keep your house warmer and update its appearance at the same time by replacing these windows with newer, single-hung windows. These may be fixed windows or they may open by swinging out on a hinge. Most newer windows feature thermal-pane glass and are far more efficient than older windows.

Instructions

    • 1

Remove the trim from around the double hung window with a putty knife, chisel or small crowbar.

    • 2

Lift the double-hung window sashes out of the window frame.

    • 3

Place the single-hung window into the window frame. If you had the new window custom manufactured to replace the old window, it should perfectly fit into the space. If you are fitting a window that wasn't made especially for that space, adjust the trim or to fill in around the frame, as needed.

    • 4

Secure the new, single-hung window in the window frame by driving screws through the designated areas in the frame of the window and into the side trim of the window frame.

    • 5

Replace the strip trim around the new window.
