What Is a Single-Hung Replacement Window?

New replacement windows are one way to improve both the energy efficiency and attractiveness of a home. Your choice of window types often comes down to deciding whether to install single-hung or double-hung windows. The most appropriate choice for your situation depends on your expectations for the new windows.
  1. Single-hung Description

    • A single-hung window has two panels of glass, one upper and one lower. The upper panel is fixed in place, and the lower panel will slide up and down to open or close the window. Typically, a single-hung window has a latch on top of the lower panel to lock the window closed. In contrast, with a double-hung window, the upper panel also will open, either by sliding up and down or by tilting inward.

    Function

    • The movable panel of a single-hung replacement window usually is held in position by friction between the window panel and the window frame or casing. The window is opened to the desired position and held in place by friction. A single-hung window should have a latching mechanism for security purposes. Compared to double-hung windows, single-hung windows have limited choices for the direction of airflow into the home. Double-hung windows allow the choice of opening either the upper or lower sections, while single-hung windows have only a single opening choice.

    Energy Efficiency

    • Single-hung replacement windows are typically less expensive than double-hung windows of the same level of insulation and energy efficiency. The relative simplicity of single-hung windows makes them easier and cheaper to manufacture. Since only a single panel of the single-hung window moves, there is less opportunity for leakage in or out of the windows when the windows are closed. The replacement window manufacturer will provide energy efficiency information on the windows you are considering.

    Cleaning and Maintenance

    • Single-hung windows are less complicated than double-hung windows, so there are fewer moving parts with which to have problems. Replacement windows typically have vinyl frames and sashes, and the only required maintenance is regular cleaning. Double-hung windows are easier to clean from the inside, since the upper section will either slide down where it is easier to reach, or will tilt inward.
