How to Replace a Window Blind Roller Ratchet

Windows that have blind rollers installed at the top of them allow you to pull a small metal chain to lower and raise a single panel of blinds. A very common problem with these types of blinds is the chain breaking or getting caught in the ratchet, which is the toothed mechanism that rotates the blind roller and attaches to the chain. If you ever notice the ratchet is cracked or falling out then you can manually replace the part with a new one at anytime.

Things You'll Need

  • Phillips screwdriver
  • Step stool (optional)

Instructions

    • 1

Stand on a step stool, if necessary, in order to access the blind roller at the top of your window.

    • 2

Turn the small wheel at the corner of the blind roller that is on the opposite side of the chain counterclockwise.

    • 3

Slide the blind roller off the mounting brackets and then roll up the blinds around the roller. Lift the chain off the ratchet and set it aside.

    • 4

Pull the ratchet, the plastic wheel pieces, off the side of the roller. The ratchet should easily pull out, but if it’s stuck, you can insert a flathead screwdriver into the side of the ratchet in order to pry it out.

    • 5

Remove the screw in the center of the new ratchet part using a Phillips screwdriver. Lift the cover off the ratchet.

    • 6

Place the ring over the side of the new ratchet, and place the cover back on. Reinsert the screw into the ratchet, and press the entire ratchet part back into the side of the roller.

    • 7

Place the blind roller back onto the mounting brackets. Turn the wheel on the side to lock the roller in place with the brackets.
