Can One Person Install Double-Hung Vinyl Replacement Windows?

Installation

• Installation of a double-hung vinyl window is not necessarily a difficult task; most homeowners can do it on their own with just a little know-how. The process basically involves removing the old window in its entirety from the opening, then placing the new window casement in place. The window panes on double-hung vinyl windows usually slide in and out for easy cleaning, making it fairly simple for one person to hang the casement and secure it in place. This is usually done from the outside of the home, but you may need to go inside to secure the casement in place. If you're working alone, you may need to use some duct tape to temporarily keep the window from falling out while you secure it.

Considerations

• In some instances, you may not be able to install all of your double-hung replacement windows on your own. Two-story homes, for example, can present unique challenges that may require one person on the outside and one on the inside holding the frame in place while the window is secured. Also, decorative and custom-made windows may add additional challenges, especially in instances where a decorative window is installed directly above a more basic window. Assess your windows on an individual basis to determine if you will need a helping hand.

Panes

• Installing the panes in the double-hung window is a task that can usually be completed by one person, once the frames have been hung. In many of the newer double-hung windows, the windows tilt in for easy cleaning, and they also slide up and down in the window tracks. Because there are two of these, the job is pretty simple for one person to handle. The exception would be in cases where the window panes are larger than normal and may be difficult to maneuver into place.

Caulking

• The final step in the vinyl window replacement process is securing the windows and sealing them off with some caulk. Caulking the windows is one of those jobs that can generally be done by one person. However, consider having a second person help you, if you plan on installing windows on the second floor. It is always a good idea to have someone hold the ladder and, if necessary, hand you additional supplies from below. Otherwise, you may find yourself going up and down the ladder constantly.
