How to Frame Wall Sections

After a solid foundation, the walls are most important component of a building. They support everything above them, including higher floors, additional walls and the roof. Walls provide the framework to support door, windows, drywall and exterior cladding. They also house electrical wires, plumbing pipes and HVAC ducts, as well as define space within the structure. While framed walls must follow local building codes, anyone with basic carpentry skills and tools can frame a wall.

Instructions

    • 1

Mark a 2-inch-by-4-inch board -- or a 2-inch-by-6-inch board at 16-inch intervals, beginning at either end. This is your soleplate, the bottom board on which the rest of the wall rests. Use pressure-treated lumber if the wall will rest on concrete or within six inches of soil to prevent moisture absorption.

    • 2

Hold a stud perpendicular to the soleplate so the the edges are flush. Drive two nail through the soleplate and into the stud. Repeat at each 16-inch mark.

    • 3

Place another board at the other end of the studs--this is the top plate. Connect the top plate to the studs with two nails at each stud. Lay another board (doubler) atop the top plate, align the edges and nail it in place to complete the wall section.
