How to Add Additives in Drywall Compound

Your taping and finishing job is only as strong as the drywall compound you use. If the compound does not get a tight bond with the drywall, the tape begins to peel and the layer above corner beads cracks, dimples and chips. This is especially common in variable climates where the structure of the house shifts. A liquid bonding additive mixed into the drywall compound works as an adhesive to help hold the compound together to maintain a smooth surface over the wall.

Instructions

    • 1

Open a 5-gallon bucket of drywall compound. Use a mixing paddle attached to a drill to stir the compound into a creamy consistency. Add about 1/4 cup of water at a time if necessary to create the desired consistency.

    • 2

Measure 4 ounces of the liquid compound additive and pour it into the drywall compound.

    • 3

Mix the additive into the compound with the mixing paddle and drill. Move the drill up and down to spread the additive consistently throughout the entire bucket of compound.
