How to Build a Stud Wall Over Vinyl Tile

Vinyl tile is a popular flooring material for bathrooms, kitchens, entryways and basements. It is one of the least expensive flooring materials and is less than one-eighth of an inch thick. Because it's so thin, building a stud wall on vinyl tile is just like building a wall on a plywood subfloor or concrete slab. It requires basic carpentry skills and minimal tools and materials. A do-it-yourselfer working alone can build a wall, but a helper will make the job much easier. Laying out the wall before you begin nailing will help you avoid mistakes and yield the best results.

Things You'll Need

  • Chalk strip
  • Tape measure
  • Carpenter's pencil
  • Circular saw
  • Nail gun
  • Framing nails
  • Masonry nails (optional)
  • 2-by-4-inch lumber

Instructions

    • 1

Snap a chalk line on the floor that outlines the location of the wall.

    • 2

Mark a 2-by-4 stud at 16-inch intervals and set it aside. This is the sill plate, which is the bottom framing member upon which the studs stand.

    • 3

Lay a stud perpendicular against the sill at each mark. Lay another stud at the other end of the studs. This is your wall layout.

    • 4

Toenail (nail at a 45-degree angle) each stud to the sill plate with two nails at each 16-inch mark. Repeat with the top plate at the other end of the studs. Place another stud atop the top plate and nail it on.

    • 5

Raise the wall on the chalk outline. Nail the end of the sill and top plates to the sill and top plates of an exterior or adjacent wall, depending on where you are framing. Nail the sill plate to the floor, using masonry nails if concrete is beneath the vinyl.
