How to Install an Inside Corner Block for Chair Rails

Installing crown molding takes patience and attention to details to ensure you attach the railing on a straight plane. As with corner blocks for crown molding, you cut inside corner blocks for chair rails to match with a miter saw at 45-degree angles. When you cut the wood for the chair rail and corner blocks cut them about 10 percent longer and larger than you measure to allow for miscalculations. You can always trim away excess wood from the wood before you install an inside corner block for chair rails.

Things You'll Need

  • Utility knife
  • Drill
  • 3/32-inch drill bit
  • 2-inch 6D finishing nails
  • Wood putty
  • Fine grit sandpaper, 200-grit

Instructions

    • 1

Hold one inside corner block against the wall with the longest edge on the bottom of the chair rail to test the fit of the molding. Adjust the molding with a coping saw as needed. Do the same with the opposite corner block.

    • 2

Test the fit again by holding both inside corners together. You can use a utility knife to scrape away any excess material left by the coping saw.

    • 3

Move the corner blocks away from the wall. Drill holes in the inside corner blocks with a drill and 3/32-inch drill bit.

    • 4

Position the inside corner tightly against the chair rail. Nail the inside corners to the wall with 2-inch 6D finishing nails. These nails have a smooth bar and a curved head that make them easy to nail into and blend in well with the molding.

Cover the nails with wood putty. Sand over the putty with fine grit sandpaper before painting the inside corners and chair rails.
