How to Pump Concrete Into a Hollow Block Wall

Hollow concrete block is a popular wall-building material. It's durable, relatively inexpensive and can be used above and below ground. For most uses, hollow block works fine, but local building codes require that walls above a certain height be filled with concrete. They can be filled by hand, but the process is tedious and labor-intensive. Pumping concrete is much more effective and efficient. Concrete companies have pump trucks that will deliver concrete to your site; you just provide the labor. Also, for smaller jobs, you can rent a pump from a local tool rental shop.

      Order concrete from a local concrete company. Specify a "pumpable" mix when ordering. Concrete that is mixed too thick is not suitable for pumping. Also, specify whether you will need a pump truck or whether you'll be supplying your own pump. Schedule a pump delivery for a few hours before your concrete is to arrive, if you are renting, so that the pump is ready when the concrete arrives.

      Run the pump hose from the pump to the block wall. Select a path free of rocks, debris, lumber, vehicles and other equipment to prevent blockages and make the job go more smoothly. Station a worker at the pump to turn it on and off on your signal.

      Hold the end of the hose pointed downward over the hole atop the end of the wall. Signal to start the concrete pump.

      Hold the hose firmly in place until you see the concrete nearing the top of the hole. Signal to stop the pump. Don't wait until the hole is completely full before stopping the pump because concrete still in the hose will continue to flow after your signal. Signaling when the hole is full will result in wasted concrete. Move to the next hole and repeat until all the holes are filled.
