How to Join Walls at Corner Studs

When constructing walls, you'll need to create posts at the locations where two corners meet to add stability. Corner posts are typically constructed of two full wall studs with blocks sandwiched in between. This buildup of studs and blocks reduces flexibility and makes the wall solid. The buildup also adds width to corners, which supply backing for drywall and other types of wall materials. Add posts to both inside and outside corners when building walls.

Instructions

    • 1

Cut three 18-inch blocks from lumber that is the same width as the wall studs using a circular saw.

    • 2

Set the first piece of lumber at the bottom of the corner stud, making sure that the sides of the block and corner stud are flush. Hammer staggered 16d spikes up the block and into the corner stud.

    • 3

Place the second block halfway up the corner stud. Hammer staggered 16d spikes up the block and into the corner stud. Set the third block at the top of the corner stud and secure it into place with the 16d spikes.

    • 4

Set another full stud over the blocks; the blocks will end up being sandwiched between the two full studs. Hammer 16d spikes through the full stud and into the blocks on the backside to complete the corner post.

    • 5

Swing the opposing wall up so that the last stud is flush against the outer edge of the corner post. Hammer 16d spikes through the opposing stud and into the corner post.
