How to Connect a Frame to a Roof

To anchor a framed wall to a roof truss or rafter, you will need to use a truss-bearing plate. These plates are designed to sit over the framed wall with a vertical face that sits flush against the truss or rafter. Use 10d nails to secure the anchor plates, which feature holes already drilled. Anchoring a wall to a roof will protect a structure, such as a porch or a carport, during high winds or in the event of an earthquake.

Instructions

    • 1

Set the truss-bearing plate on top of the framed wall with its tabs hanging over the sides. Flush the top face of the plate to the roof truss. Hammer 10 nails through the plate and into the roof truss, using the predrilled slots for fastener placement.

    • 2

Hammer five additional 10d nails into the location where the plate side tab rests against the framed wall's top plate, using the already-drilled slots for fastener placement. Repeat the process on the opposite tab located on the other side of the framed wall.

    • 3

Place another truss-bearing plate on the opposite side of the first plate and repeat the nailing process. Move down to the next truss and repeat the nailing process until the entire framed wall is secured.
