How to Lay Out a Large Radius in Framing

A large diameter radius complicates the process of framing house components. Although the process is complicated, correctly laying out the required radius does not involve complicated math or an extensive knowledge of pattern layout. A few common hand tools allow you to lay out framing with arcs up to 100 feet in length. Using the tools correctly ensures the radius will be the exact size required. The process requires a large cleared area to ensure the marked radius is correct.

Instructions

    • 1

Stretch a tape measure from the area getting the radius framing to a distance equal to the required radius. Clear all debris from the area. Ensure you clear a large enough area to swing the required arc.

    • 2

Drive a nail into the floor or ground at the required measurement with a hammer. Leave the nailhead sit 1 to 2 inches above the substrate’s surface.

    • 3

Tie one end of a long string to the secured nail. Pull the string along the tape measure. Make a pencil mark on the string to designate the radius length. Tie the marked end of the string around the body of the pencil. Remove the tape measure from the area.

    • 4

Pull the string tight. Hold the tip of the pencil against the floor or board to receive the radius with the pencil body sitting perpendicular to the surface.

    • 5

Swing the pencil around the area while keeping the string taught. Stop swinging when the drawn arc meets the points required for the framing. Remark the string and repeat the process for each different size radius.
