How to Attach Paneling to a Styrofoam Wall

You can attach paneling to basement walls that are covered with rigid Styrofoam for insulation purposes without the addition of furring strips or stud walls. The paneling will protect the foam insulation as well as make basement walls more attractive, important if you use the space as an addition to your home. You'll need an adhesive that is specially formulated for use with foam products, as some types of glue can eat away the foam or cause noxious gasses. Foam adhesive comes in a tube that is administered with a caulking gun.

Instructions

    • 1

Cut 1/4-inch from the tip of the foam and panel adhesive tube using a utility knife. Puncture the seal located inside the tube tip using the wire puncture tool at the front of the caulking gun.

    • 2

Slip the tip of the adhesive tube into the front of the caulking gun cradle. Swing the back end of the adhesive tube into the caulking gun, pulling the plunger arm back if it is in the way.

    • 3

Squeeze the caulking gun's handle until the plunger is set inside the adhesive tube. Lay the panel down, with the backside facing towards you. Angle the adhesive tube tip against the back of the panel and squeeze the handle to produce a 1/2-inch bead.

    • 4

Continue making 1/2-inch adhesive beads around the entire outside edge of the paneling. Stop squeezing the adhesive tube's handle and lift its tip from the back of the paneling.

    • 5

Create another 1/2-inch adhesive bead line within the existing bead line every 12 inches apart; there should be no spaces of more than 12 inches between the bead lines to ensure a proper hold.

    • 6

Flip the panel so that the backside is facing the Styrofoam wall. Swing the bottom edge in and hold it in place with your foot so that it is flush against the wall. Swing the top end of the panel into the foam wall.

    • 7

Pull the panel off the foam to allow the adhesive to become tacky, following the product manufacturer's recommended drying time. Set the panel against the foam wall while rubbing your hands or forearms across the entire face of the panel to ensure that the adhesive spreads evenly between the two surfaces.

Continue the process with the next panel.
