How to Remove Cinder Blocks for Pellet Stoves

In addition to their high combustion efficiency and clean fuel loading, pellet stoves also offer the advantage of being direct-vented. This increases your options of where to place one inside your home. You can easily vent a pellet stove by removing a portion of a cinder block wall so you can run the vent work outdoors.

Things You'll Need

  • Grease pencil or chalk
  • 2 drop cloths
  • Electric drill
  • Masonry bit
  • Masonry chisel

Instructions

    • 1

Choose the location for your pellet stove. When the vent work emerges through the exterior portion of the wall, it must be at least 12 inches above the ground. If you are on the ground floor or an upper story, you can vent the pellet stove directly from the back.

    • 2

Put the venting ductwork that came with your pellet stove in place without sealing it together; you will permanently install it later.

    • 3

Extend the venting to the cinder block wall inside your home. Trace around it with the grease pencil to mark its circumference and where it touches the wall. Disassemble the venting and move it out of the way.

    • 4

Spread one drop cloth out on the floor beneath the circle you drew on the wall. Spread the other on the ground outside on the other side of the cinder block.

    • 5

Drill holes into the wall on the circle line, using the masonry bit. Drill holes all the way around the circle, making them as close together as you can. Drill holes in the interior of the circle to further break up the cinder block.

    • 6

Knock the cinder block back toward the exterior of your home with the masonry chisel, chipping out any stubborn bits of block as you clear the way.

    • 7

Clean up the dust and debris from inside your home by taking the drop cloths to your exterior trash can and dumping in the bits of cinder block.
