How to Make a Nailer for Crown Molding

For heavy-duty crown molding, making a nailer to attach to your wall provides additional support for your decorative trim. Having the advantage of a fixed nailer spanning the length of your wall allows you to nail the crown molding at closer intervals rather than just at wall studs, giving you the opportunity to create an elaborate crown-molding effect for your room. Making a nailer provides a simple solution for do-it-yourself design enthusiasts to ensure a durable and secure finish.

Instructions

    • 1

Measure the length of the wall from corner to corner at the ceiling-to-wall transition using the measuring tape. Make a note of the measurement for each wall. Total the measurements and add 10 percent for wastage to calculate the lengths of 1 1/2-by-1/2-inch general purpose wood you require.

    • 2

Locate each vertical supporting stud along the wall using a stud finder. Mark each stud width 2 inches below the top of the wall with a pencil.

    • 3

Mark a cutting line onto the nailer wood with a pencil using the wall measurement length. Cut the wood along the line with the wood saw. Sand the cut edge with coarse-grain sandpaper to remove any roughness.

    • 4

Position the nailer along the top of the wall, starting at a corner. Attach the nailer to the wall with 1 1/2-inch wood screws centered on each stud, using a screwdriver.
