How to Fix Cracks Above Door Frames

Cracks commonly appear above doorways due to the shrinking of the wood frame beneath the wall. Over time, these cracks can worsen. While they are not actual structural problems, these cracks are unsightly. Simply painting over them will hide the cracks temporarily, but they will eventually need to be repaired. In order to fix the problem and prevent it from recurring, it is necessary to use drywall tape and joint compound. If any new cracks appear, they can be fixed using this same method.

Instructions

    • 1

Clean the cracked area with a damp cloth. You will need to remove any dirt, cobwebs or debris that may be on the wall. Allow this area time to dry.

    • 2

Tape over the crack. Use drywall tape to completely cover over it. Smooth this out with your hand and press firmly to make sure you have a good seal.

    • 3

Cover the tape with joint compound. Use a trowel and a thin layer of joint compound. Cover over the tape completely and feather the edges into the surrounding wall. Do not apply too much joint compound. Give the compound enough time to dry according to manufacturer's instructions.

    • 4

Sand the compound. Use a medium to fine grade of sandpaper. Smooth out any rough spots and sand down the compound until it is flush with the rest of the wall. Do not overdo the sanding, however; this will weaken the work you have already completed.

Paint the area. Use a paint roller to apply paint over the patch and blend it in with the surrounding area.
