Do it Yourself Texturing of Walls

Wall texture beautifies and adds interest to walls and ceilings. The choices of commercial texture compounds available allow for a complete customization of interior wall design and mood. Finer textures exhibit a more polished and refined look and feel, suitable for nearly any application, while coarser textures show off personal style in a bold or artistic manner. Textured design material can also conceal cosmetic wall defects.

Instructions

    • 1

Wash the walls thoroughly, in areas planned for the application. Use a mild and nonabrasive cleaner, such as dishwashing detergent or liquid soap,. Rinse and allow the area to dry completely.

Texture adds visual interest to living spaces.

Mix the drywall compound with a paddle bit, attached to a drill. A basic texture mixture consists of lightweight drywall compound and water. Measure six cups of drywall compound, inside a small bucket. Add water slowly, as additional drywall compound cannot be added to the mixture, without producing unsightly clumps. Use more water for a thinner texture or less water for a thicker texture.

      Apply texture to the wall.

Apply the texture material. Use a roller for thinner applications and textured paints. Apply thicker textures with a drywall texture gun, to achieve a splatter-type pattern. Use brushes to produce swirls and specific design patterns.

A good coat of paint will protect the textured wall from damage.

Step back and look at the wall from a distance. Correct any bare or uneven areas. Allow the textured finish to dry thoroughly. Do not touch the wall texture, until it has dried completely, as it is fragile. Carefully apply a finish coat of latex paint to seal and protect the wall from damage. Apply a second coat, if desired.
