How to Hide an Ugly Wall

A wall can appear unattractive because of cracks, a subpar paint job, an uneven surface or any other number of reasons, including having a color that just doesn't appeal to you. Utilize different solutions to partially hide an imperfect, ugly wall or use methods that are even more permanent and effective at hiding the entire wall. Even as an amateur do-it-yourselfer, you can hide the offending wall yourself.

Instructions

    • 1

Hang large paintings or photographs at strategic spots on the wall to draw attention to the artwork or photos, instead of to the wall itself.

    • 2

Cover the wall in fabric panels. Install curtain rods and hang fabric from the rods. Use a good fabric spray starch to stiffen the panels.

    • 3

Repair the wall. Put 120-grit sandpaper onto a pole sander, which allows you to reach high wall areas. Place plastic sheeting on the floor in front of the wall and put on a dust mask and cap for your personal protection. Start at the top wall corners and sand the entire wall, using the pole sander.

    • 4

Vacuum up the dust from the wall, using a wet/dry vacuum. Dip a sponge in soapy water, and wipe down the entire wall surface. Wipe the wall down a second time with a sponge wet with water. Allow the wall to dry.

    • 5

Patch any cracks and holes in the wall surface, using spackling or joint compound. Allow the patches to completely dry, and sand them smooth with 120-grit sandpaper.

    • 6

Apply primer to the entire wall, using a paintbrush. Allow the primer to fully dry, following the manufacturer's recommendations.

    • 7

Paint the wall with texture paint. Pour the paint into a paint tray and apply it with a paint roller. The texture paint completely hides any wall imperfections.
