Mix the grout by hand in a bucket and add water according to the manufacturer’s instructions based upon how much grout you are mixing for your baseboard project. Let the grout sit for 10 minutes and apply mastic tape to the wall above the baseboard so you can protect the paint and drywall from the cleaning of the grout.
Remix the grout to prepare it for the smearing process. Scoop some of the grout out of the bucket with your trowel or grout float. Spread it onto the face of the baseboard with the grout float and use the float to press grout into the joints between tiles, between the floor and baseboard and along the top edge of the tile where it meets the wall. Remove excess grout with the float.
Let the grout sit for around 20 minutes. Use a square corner on the end of your margin trowel to cut off the excess grout along the top edge of the tile and the intersection of floor and baseboard tile. Pull the trowel along these two areas and let the corner of the trowel contour the grout at these areas.
Dampen a sponge and use it to smooth the joints down and remove the grout haze from the face of the grout. Rinse your sponge out frequently but never use it when it is wet as excess water will damage the grout. Repeat the process until the face of the tile is cleaned. Wait an hour and remove the tape.
